Summary of PediatricXpress EHR ONC Certification

The pediatricXpress EHR system (version 20) by PhysicianXpress, Inc. received an enhanced Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) certification on December 10, 2020.  The current ONC certification for PediatricXpress includes 36 certification criteria as well certification on eight (8), Pediatric-focused, Clinical Quality Measures (CQMs).  Currently, the pediatricXpress system is the pediatric EHR with the highest number of total ONC certification criteria and is the only Pediatric EHR to achieve an approved ONC certification for Clinical Quality Measures (see the ONC Certified HealthIT Product list).

Importance of ONC Certified HealthIT

HealthIT.gov sets standards, establishes policies and oversee certifications.  The ONC certification is defined in thousands of pages that describe the standards EHRs must meet to be certified.  Some of the most complicated requirements involve data exchange between EHR systems, Health Systems and other applications.  Systems that are ONC certified have passed extensive testing and validation administrated by ONC-approved certifying organizations such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).

EHR Design:   Multi-Specialty EHR vs. Pediatric-Specific EHR

Most EHR vendors build one common EHR that has some configurations.  These generalized EHRs are unable satisfy many unique requirements of pediatric practices without “work arounds” that require extra steps and manual processes. Some EHR systems are built like a spreadsheet or database with many boxes to fill in and some force completion of data elements.  While some of these systems require Pediatric providers to complete many data fields for the benefit of the data team, Pediatric providers complain that the design of some of these systems are too rigid and result in hours of charting/data entry for the Pediatric providers.

The PediatricXpress system is built with flexibility to allow the practice and/or providers to choose how much data to enter related to managing patients and charting. The decision on the depth of charting and use of the many components of PediatricXpress is determined by the practice.
